OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

When people seek talk therapy, their body and minds need to be working together. When individuals have experienced trauma, attachment related issues, developmental concerns, and some related mental health concerns, the mind and body can display a disconnect. This may range from not being able to be still, highly reactive, shallow breath, tension in the body and face, and poor planning. It is at those times that talk therapy is at a disadvantage. If individuals do not have a calm and organized nervous system, then they cannot access thinking and reasoning. At Healing Hearts, we have found that individuals need to be “in their body” and “present” before they can access thinking and processing. Regulation must come first.

At Healing Hearts, Mental Health Occupational Therapy is beneficial for the following conditions:

  • Inability to transition from one thing to the next
  • Bounces from one thing to another
  • Excessive risk-taker
  • Unaware of surroundings
  • Gets car sick
  • Constantly making sounds
  • Always has to chew on something
  • Seeks control
  • Sensitivity to smells
  • Bothered by tags or seams
  • Co-regulation issues.

Mental Health Occupational Therapy at Healing Hearts is focused on helping clients and families understand what they need for their body to support physical and emotional regulation.

Clients who need work on regulation may have underlying sensory processing difficulties such as processing and giving meaning to sights, sounds, touch, movement, and sensing their body or body awareness. Sensory issues often lead to challenges with motor planning; the ability to have an idea, come up with steps to accomplish that idea, execute the idea, and finally the ability to adapt the plan for success or know when/how to end it.

Occupational Therapy uses a variety of methods to help clients understand how to be organized in their bodies. This may include:

  • Sensory Integration
  • Integrated Listening Systems
  • Co-regulation
  • Reflex Integration
  • Theraplay
  • Body Work
  • Parent Support and Education
